Shoot three
Plans for shoot:
My plan for this shoot was to photograph plants and alter them in Photoshop to give them a distorted/ glitched look. Glitch art is an art form that harnesses the visual effects of data corruption. By applying certain encoding or actions to an image, a photograph can become visually corrupted while retaining a usable file.
Research influence
Sabato Visconti is a media artist and photographer based Western Massachusetts. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and raised in Miami. His work seeks to reconfigure traditional understanding of photography and digital media, by interrogating how hegemonic structures distort and influence individual subjects.
Sabato began experimenting with glitch processes in 2011. Since then, his work with digital media has been exhibited throughout the world, including spaces like Tate Britain, his work has also appeared in TIME, Vogue,WIRED and The New York Times.
i aim to created images like this one from his RGB study but with a mix of floral photography.
Harold Feinstein was an american fine art photographer, when he passed away in June, 2015, the New York Times declared him: “One of the most accomplished recorders of the American experience.”. He started his career young, at the age of 15, and within a few years Edward Steichen purchased some of his work for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Feinstein about his flowers work "In the late 90′s I began to experiment with digital photography and became one of the first to use a scanner as a camera. This resulted in seven books of large format colour photographs and the Smithsonian Computerworld Award for digital photography in 2000."
i aim to created images like this one with the same level of bold colours that stand out really well but by using Visconti's way of image manipulation.

Image bank (containing 5 images)
My Best images (target 4 - 6),
Images that require improvement
this image is out of focus and due to this it was really blurred |
the focus was incorrect on this image, i wanted the focus to be on the foreground |
i didn't like the way the sunlight hit the flower in this image |
the bee in this images was blurred, i would've preferred for the bee to be stationary to get the proper focus |
the focus of this image was meant to be more on the foreground |
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for recording this shoot was to photograph plants and alter them in Photoshop to give them a distorted/ glitched look. Glitch art is an art form that harnesses the visual effects of data corruption. By applying certain encoding or actions to an image, a photograph can become visually corrupted while retaining a usable file.
With reference to my best images, I feel that although I could not create photographs exactly like Visconti and Feinstein's photos, I did create a set that was in the style of a mix of their work (glitch). I am happy with the overall outcome of my images and feel that they all show my ability to artificially edit an image to give an unrealistic look. i decided to edit my images to make them sharper in order to reflect Feinstein's work on flowers as well as adding a glitched effect.
With regards to some of the images that did not come out as I expected, I struggled to the right focus and to get the light on the right parts of the flowers, that's why some of my images contained aspects that i didn't want.
AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
camera settings for all images
1/640 sec shutter speed, f/8, ISO 100, flash didn't fire for all images
glitch effect process/ tutorial that i used
To edit this image i really wanted to create a computer experiment, to do this i did some research on Visconti's work with glitching and eventually found a tutorial on how to create an image similar to his work, the link for this is above.
The image below demonstrates how the original above image came to be the final edit which is to the right of this text, the process was more trial and error with selecting the right parts of the image to shift but i am content with the overall outcome.
All the other images were edited in a different way
These four images were all edited the same, they started with the original image which i then played around with to get the right brightness, contrast, hue and saturation that i wanted to make the image stand out, i then created 3 duplicated layers of the altered original, the first two, i changed the colour balance of and made it either more green, red, orange or yellow, i then shifted both of them to either the left or right. With the 3rd duplicate i used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the subject of the image and used a layer mask to only reveal the selected part of the top layer, i then feathered the revealed image, i then altered the opacity of all layers to create the distorted look in which the different coloured layers stood out on, once i was happy with the positioning of the layers i flattened the image by merging the layers and further altered the brightness, contrast, hue and saturation.
AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
(Here you will discuss how you developed your work based on your research of e.g. artists/photographers, etc).
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe i have produced a relatively strong set of images inspired by Feinstein and his macro floral photography as well as Visconti and his glitch portfolio, the final images were refined by the following processes:
i then further adjusted the brightness and contrast till i got my desired looks which are my final images, shown below:
Progression: you must refer to what you will do next to improve on either the shoot you have done or how you will develop your project in the next shoot.

The artist research was very useful during these shoots as I had some inspiration on how to tackle the finer details of the flowers from an outside location. My research of Feinstein's flowers portfolio helped me to focus on the intricate details of the plants and their petals as well as the contrast between their colours whereas my research on Visconti gave me a new outlook on editing my images. I found this helpful because i could easily create this using the resources that i have available. The research on colour saturation (shown in my techniques post) and Harold Feinstein's work was helpful to this study and I feel that I shot some good photos that had enough contrast between the colours and saturation to bring out the boldest colours within my images.

for my next shoot i aim to use a studio setting to create bold images both from close up and far away to reflect my research influence of Feinstein but without the use of a scanner.
